BCM World

Here is installment #2 of what exactly we’re up to these days {to read installment #1, click here}:

bcm world dec 2015

Years ago, the BCM World was a print magazine that came out quarterly. The goal of the magazine is to share what is happening within BCM International. My very first article was actually published in spring 2009. I wrote it right after we arrived in Peru for our first time term. You can read it here. I never imagined that I’d get to be a journalist for this magazine on a regular basis!

For a variety of reasons, the print edition was not able to happen for a few years. When we got back to the States, the idea was floated around about possibly starting it up again, but as an e-zine. That came to fruition in 2012 and has been going strong ever since and continuing to build momentum.

I was asked to write for it, to which I readily accepted. I have the opportunity to interview and write about missionaries and ministries across the globe. I’ve written about Brazil, Ukraine, Philippines, and, most recently, Madagascar. Sometimes it’s complicated as English is not the first language of most of the missionaries I interview. We also rely on internet, so sometimes communication is sketchy. But, it’s been fascinating doing these interviews and I’m learning a lot about missions journalism.

Honestly, I don’t remember how Brian doing graphic design came into the picture. It’s something he’d messed around with and read a lot about, but he had never really done a lot of design. Somehow, the responsibility of laying out the e-zines landed on him. He ran with it, took some additional online courses, and is now the graphic designer. I never realized how much this entails. He needs to not only lay out the magazine, but then build the websites, the mailing, the giving pages, get it proofed by numerous people a number of times, redo things, place pictures, find available pictures online, come up with captions, get it emailed out and put online, then promoted on social media over the course of the following weeks. From start to finish, it’s generally about two full weeks of work for a regular e-zine, much more for the print, compilation edition we do once a year.

This was a few months ago, but it’s one of my favorite pictures. He’d worked all day at MRF, helped with the kids and got them to bed, then put in headphones, and started his evening work on the BCM World. I needed to do something without a crying baby, so he took BabyJ, too, for awhile.

The latest edition will come out within the next couple of days. We hope you take the time to read it!

Could you pray for:

  • our co-workers in Sri Lanka who are battling the after effects of massive flooding? They’re still in need of supplies and prayers for safety. You’ll be able to read about the ordeal in the magazine!
  • us to be able to share with more people the many varied ministries within BCM and the opportunities worldwide?
